Every June 16 around the world, we commemorate the Day of the African Child. What is it? Where does this day come from? The theme of this year’s 2024 celebration was “Education for all children in Africa: time has come. Education for all children in Africa: the time has come “
𝐔𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐮 𝐝’𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐫𝐞 :
The Day of the African Child is an international day organized every year since June 16, 1991 by the Organization of African Unity, in memory of the massacre of hundreds of children during a march for their rights in Soweto by the apartheid regime on June 16, 1976. Coalitions for global action against poverty chose this occasion to declare it African White Band Day, and to make a regional plea to the leaders of the countries concerned to take immediate action to eradicate extreme poverty, which causes the death of a child every 3 seconds on average.
Nowadays :
In South Africa, children and adults will come to Soweto to demand that African leaders help orphans and vulnerable children. Loise Bwambale, a member of the Pan-African Parliament, will head up operations.
In Kenya, a huge mobilization of some 5,000 children will gather in Thika. The event will take place at Kiandutu Slum, which has the highest percentage of orphaned children. The vice-president will be present, but the guest of honor will be a child.
In Senegal, a huge event involving 500 children is planned. A giant lobbying meeting with the President of Senegal and children is planned during the event. Celebrities such as Youssou NDour, Baaba Maal, Coumba Gawlo, Viviane Ndour, Mada Ba, Oumar Pene, Coumba Gawlo and Abdou Djite were also invited.
