INTRODUCTORY TRAINING FOR WORKING WITH THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED

Initiated by the New Horizons Foundation in view of the imminent start of the new school year for the two establishments TARII and WISI, the training course on“INITIATION TO WORK WITH THE VISUALLY DEFIICTED” was held from August 08 to 14 under the supervision of Marie-Renée Hector, Director of the Adapted Teaching Department (DPEA), assisted by Louise Mayombo and Katia Agondjo. The course was set up as a refresher for some and a new initiation for others, and was aimed at future team members as well as applicants, without incurring substantial costs. The training program was very practical. The guidelines were as follows: – Basic knowledge of the most common illnesses, what some visually impaired people can perceive , the essential difficulties associated with blindness – Reading and writing in Braille– Calculating– Relief drawing

The aim at the end of this training course is for all professionals involved to be able to understand how pupils acquire their knowledge, and to be able to read pupils’ copies and correct texts. For example, an ordinary cp book includes lessons where children are asked to write in upper or lower case; this is useless graphical work for a child working in braille writing, as braille simply needs a small sign preceding the letter so that we know it’s an upper case letter. At this level, learning Braille is easier. But this will not be the case for mathematics, which is presented online as formulas encoded in LATEX before being printed in ordinary books with a common presentation. In fact, mathematical braille is like LATEX, which is the presentation of text before printing.
